Family Devotional: Communication (Session 8)
Session 8: Standing Firm—The Armor of God
Key Points
Spiritual Battle in Family Life
The enemy targets families and marriages because they reflect God’s relationship with the church.
Attacks may increase as routines change (e.g., back to school, new seasons), but this is not a sign of failure—it’s evidence of spiritual opposition.
Recognizing the reality of spiritual warfare is crucial; otherwise, families may be blindsided by conflict and discouragement.
The Armor of God—Practical and Spiritual Protection
Belt of Truth
Holds everything together; without truth, life falls apart.
In a world of misinformation, God’s Word is the only reliable truth.
Breastplate of Righteousness
Guards the heart.
True righteousness comes from God dwelling within, not just knowledge about Him.
Shoes of the Gospel of Peace
Provides a firm foundation.
Like Roman soldiers’ cleated sandals, the gospel helps believers stand strong and not be pushed back.
Shield of Faith
The first line of defense against the enemy’s attacks.
Faith is a gift from God, and without it, believers are vulnerable.
Helmet of Salvation
Protects the mind.
Right thinking and assurance of salvation are essential to withstand spiritual attacks.
Sword of the Spirit (God’s Word)
The only offensive weapon, used to combat spiritual forces, not to harm others.
It must be wielded under God’s direction.
Prayer
The vital act that connects believers to God, their commander.
Praying for oneself and others keeps the spiritual army united and guided.
All or Nothing
The armor works as a complete set; partial protection leaves believers exposed.
Every family member, regardless of age, can and should “put on” the armor if they know Christ.
Family Discipleship
Parents are the first disciplers of their children.
The home is the primary place for gospel teaching and spiritual preparation.
Even young children can and should be equipped for spiritual battle.
Encouragements & Applications
Self-Assessment
Families are urged to honestly evaluate whether they are spiritually “armed and ready.”
Practical Steps
Take time together to pray, read scripture, and discuss the reality of spiritual warfare.
Openness
Share prayer needs within the family and church community.
Support one another.
Ongoing Battle
The enemy does not rest—neither should the commitment to prayer and spiritual readiness.
Closing Prayer Highlights
Gratitude for the journey through the devotional series.
Prayer for families to know Christ, to disciple their children, and to be spiritually equipped.
We call for parents to take up their role as the first proclaimers of the gospel to their children.
Blessing for all participants, regardless of family structure, to apply these truths in daily life.
